Turkeys and chemo...
Without a doubt, I ate more food on Thanksgiving than I have since my surgery. I felt miserable afterward, but it was nice. We did the meal at our house this year: Turkey, Brussels sprouts, homemade cranberries, stuffing, etc. Good stuff. Ella thought it was chicken and had to ask twice for more. Chicken, turkey...whatever...at least she liked it!

My appetite has been steadily improving since radiation ended and I've managed to maintain my weight (around 172) without the use of my feeding pump. In fact, I think we're going to remove it tonight. The nurse at MD Anderson told Amy how to remove the thing and I'm truly ready for it to go. It was a life saver during treatments, but it is very uncomfortable at times and it's always 'weeping' (which I guess is the nurses nice way of saying "oozing crud"). I was looking at the care instructions for my J-tube that the hospital sent home and even that literature mentions the constant 'crust' that needs to be cleaned. Bleck. The stitches that held the tube in place are long gone (painfully), so the only thing that holds it in me is tape. The nurse warned us that when we pull it out, expect there to be about 2 feet of tube that comes out. Should be interesting...

Today was my final chemo disconnect, which means for now, I'm done. Damn...I'm done. I know this whole cancer journey is not over, but it really feels like I've made some progress. The next thing on the horizon is a round of tests back in Houston, including a biopsy, endoscopy, CT scan, doctor consultations, x-rays, etc. I'm optimistically hoping for a clean bill of health...at least for a few years. I'm very aware of the possibility of recurrence, but for now, I just want to jump back into 'normal' life, realizing of course that it'll be a new normal.

One of the things I'm most looking forward to is doing a new cooking show on ETC3. The Food Network experience gave me some great insight on the process, and my earlier show on ETC gave me the experience. I have some fun ideas brewing.

Hot tea is calling me. Much love and respect to you all,

Hans

Fantastic Hans! I'm glad you are feeling so upbeat. That, combined with a faith that God doesn't put anything on us we can't handle, is well over half the battle I believe.

How's your doc about live culture foods? Your dad knows someone locally who makes a true Feta that Joe describes as excellent...if your doc says that is OK some would probably appear at the inn with your name on it...

Hang in there...a positive outlook and a strong faith will get you a long ways down the recovery road.

So glad to see your post tonight, and that steady improvement has been going on. Congratulations on finishing up the radiation and chemo! Try not to stir up any more hurricanes when you go back to Houston. You and your family, continue to be in our prayers.

Glad to hear you had a good Thanksgiving. Ny last chemo in 1996 was 2 days after Christmas I was happy it was over but it was a little scary, too.
And here I am 9 years later and doing great,as I know you will do so as well.
Good luck with the tube removal and I hope the nurse was wrong.
Best to you and your family, Hans.

Hans, I know you are SOOOOOOO happy to have the treatments over with. With all the eating associated with Thanksgiving, I'm glad you were able to enjoy the holiday with food. And I agree with Ella-I'm still not sure I know the difference in taste between turkey and chicken!!!!! I know you will be happy to have the feeding tube out. My mother had a feeding tube for several years and they are a marvelous means of taking in nutrition when you aren't able to eat but I know what you mean about the care. Not for the weak of stomach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm looking forward to the cooking show on ETC. Sounds great!
Here's wishing you better days.
Happy Holidays to you, Amy and the children!

Dear Hans,
I am very very thankful to hear you are finished with your chemo. Wow! You did it!
On to gaining weight and not feeling sick!
My little Katie and I pray for you every night. Katie is a very faithful prayer warrior :o) She still prays for people who are well...and have been well for over a year. I hate to interrupt her little prayers...so I let her pray for all of the people she can remember. And she remembers you Hans. I will tell her you will be feeling well soon!

Your soon, has come.

All this good news couldn't have come at a better time of the year. I give Thanks to God for all the answered prayers and the big improvement in your condition. Here's praying that the positive changes continue! I had a big smile hearing about your eating all the Thanksgiving food. Hans you are well on your way to getting back to normal. Praise God!
Keep it up and keep posting your journal. It's a blessing to all of us!
I was blessed to have my son Walt drive up from Jasper for the holiday. He took off today to return to your beautiful little town. Hope to get there again soon and have another wonderful meal at the Woodbridge Inn. What a treat.

My feelings are so optimistic for you. Thanksgiving must have truly been a day of thanksgiving for where you are after where you've been. You are in my prayers daily to St. Bernard of Clairvoux who is a patron for those with cancer. God bless!

What a great entry to read tonight. I am thankful you had the opportunity to feast a little. May each and every step from here on out bring you more healing, less discomfort and joyful days with your family and your job. I can't wait to see you on your show again. As always, thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share this ordeal with you. Continued prayers nightly,

Hans, I'm so excited and tickled that you have completed both radiation and chemo. Since my husband and I returned from our cross-country RVing on November 3, I had been checking periodically to see how you stood with your treatments.

So glad you can eat more and I'm wondering if you are even cooking. I've caught some of your cooking shows on ETC since our return and really liked them so I can't wait to see your new ideas. Alvin and I decided on our trip that the South is the best place for food in our country with all the many vegetables.

Ease back into your "normal" routine, and I pray you will just get better and better. Always keeping you on my mind and in my prayers. Hettie Young

So happy to see that you have come through this with your health and sense of humour intact. Fingers crossed for you in Houston - I am sure that you will be just fine. Hopefully you'll soon be back in the kitchen/in front of the camera where you belong :)

I really enjoyed reading your Thanksgiving message. Sounds like the meal was wonderful, and the best part of all - - you are home to partake and enjoy. We were thinking about you during Thanksgiving, wondering how you and your family were doing. Like Ella, our granddaughter Calla, age 2, referred to the turkey as chicken. As you said, whatever works!

We will be keeping you in our hearts as you return to M.D. Anderson for follow-up tests. I too am anxious for you to return to ETC - - I so enjoyed your cooking show while at our little mountain place. Barbara Eubanks always referred to it as our treehouse.

Please pass our warmest regards to your Mom and Dad. I'm sure their Thanksgiving was very special. Take care of yourself and we look forward to additional updates. Thank you for taking the time to do the updates. Bless you, Hans.

Warmest regards, Carol & Dan Scoggins (friends of Tom Eubanks)

Hans, Just read a little paperback book that made me think of you and thought I'd recommend it. Amazon.com has it so it's easy to get. It's called "90 Minutes in Heaven" by Don Piper. The reason I think you might enjoy it isn't necessarily the "heaven" part, but the pain and recovery that the author had to go thru following a fatal (that's part of the story!) accident. It's very encouraging and I think it would be a spirit lifter to anyone going thru any kind of medical ordeal. Let us know if you choose to read it and what you think. If I had your address I'd order one for you! That's just how much I think it's worth reading.
