The end of Radiation...

For those of you keeping track at home (I know I was), today was in fact the final day of radiation.  Not by coincidence, my esophagus hurts terribly bad today...very hard to swallow.  Dr. Schwaibold tells me that my swallowing functions should be back to 'normal' (that word has little meaning to me now) in about 10 days.  I'm counting them...

I've had terrible problems with coughing lately, which may have been triggered by the reflux I'd been experiencing from radiation.  Whatever the case, the very act of coughing causes all sort of problems.  First, the j-tube is located right on the part of my left belly that contracts when I cough.  The last of the 3 stitches that was holding the j-tube in place finally popped off, so now it's just held in place with some really strong tape.  It's not strong enough to keep the thing from moving in and out a bit when I cough though, so every cough hurts.  Each cough is really rough on my entire right side (where my last surgery was) as well.  I hate coughing.

As of now, my last day of chemo is set for the 25th of November.  We're heading back to MD Anderson in Houston in a few weeks for follow up appointments, and the oncologist may recommend more.  I hope not.  I'm ready for something other than cancer treatments.  Overall I think I've done fairly well with them, but I'm really over it at this point.  Obviously, if they say I need more, I'll do more.  Whatever it takes.

Some good news:  my blood counts are all looking good, especially my hemoglobin.  It's been as low as 6.4, but it's been steadily rising and is now up to 11.4 (my target is around 14).

If you haven't already, go and check out some of the new potential contestants for season 2 of the Next Food Network Star.  www.foodnetwork.com  I remember when I was one of those internet contestants, and I swear the online voting portion was as stressful as the actual competition.  I'm very interested to see how this next season progresses.  Should be a fun to watch...

As always, I'm tired.  Thank you all for keeping up with me.  I know some of you have expressed concern that I'm not posting as frequently, but there's honestly not much going on right now.

Best wishes to you all and I hope everyone who celebrates it enjoys their Thanksgiving (there's no Thanksgiving in Germany...they have turkeys, just no Pilgrims)

Hans

Nice to hear the radiation finished today. I completely understand the lack of posting lately. You spoiled us with your earlier comments much more frequently. Now we can pray for rapid improvement following radiation and a finish to the chemo. You are certainly ready and deserving of improvement after the rough road.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and ALL your family with special blessings every day. Love to all, Mary Smith

I'm so glad to hear you are finished with the radiation and that the chemo is almost finished as well. I was not surprised you haven't posted much lately. I've been amazed at how much you did post before, because when I was under treatment it was all I could do to read my email, much less write anything. And I didn't even have any of the problems you had. Hearing about your j-tube makes me flinch - that was one of the most miserable things I've ever experienced! So sorry you have had such a rough time of it and hope that everything just gets better and better from here on. I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Hans,
You and your family always occupy a little corner of my thoughts and prayers. I was in town and out at the Woodbridge on Sunday, and ran into your mom, so this week even more than usual. I'm so glad to hear things are looking up and getting to the good part. Hang in there!

I don't know you, but I came to your site after looking at Lumplings. My father battled cancer for over ten years. I was very close to him, but I never knew what it was like for him to be a father and a husband going through treatment and hospitalization. Thank you for your honesty. Your journal has given me a glimpe into my father's life. He survived Leukemia, but by the time they found his bladder cancer, it was too late. I miss my dad, but his cancer gave my family a chance to grow stronger. My dad was my best friend, and I treasure all the moments we had together. You sound like a fighter. Keep on going, you have your whole life to look forward too!
Sincerely,

So glad your radiation is over. Maybe you will at least get a break from all this in between the end of chemo next week and going to MD Anderson. Your blood count has really improved! You have been so brave going through all of this. Hope things just keep getting better!

So glad to hear the radiation is finished. I have a little bit of reflux that drives me nuts so I can only imagine what you've been thru. Keep looking to God for your strength and we'll keep praying.
You have a lot to be thankful for on Turkey Day.
Blessings!

Hans, I'm so glad to hear that your radiation treatments are over! Hopefully the rest of it will be done soon. Will pray that you get a great report back from your upcoming visit to Texas. That's great news about your blood count too! And I am definitely going to check out the upcoming chef's who are at the internet voting stage. Hang in there and I hope you have a great week ahead and a very wonderful holiday season to start. :-)

Hans....I am grateful for your story....More than 11 years ago my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer. He had surgery the day before Christmas. He survived. The messages from family and friends helped both of us endure. I hope this does the same for you and your family. Bless you and yours. I am praying for your recovery and return to perfect health. Take care.

So glad to hear you're done with the radiation - now to get past the chemo. I hope that your visit to MD Anderson gives great news and that no more chemo is needed.

We're all keeping you, Amy and the kids in our thoughts and prayers. I hope you have more pain-free moments, and days, soon!

I'm taking this post as good news, radiation is done and hopefully nearing the end of the chemo. I too was concerned that you hadn't posted in some time and have been praying that you were doing well with the treatments. The tube thing sounds freaky!

Keep you chin up and enjoy the holiday with your family.

I've just finished brining the turkey, making the dressing and sweet potatoes and setting the tables and I am pretty thankful. I am especially thankful that your radiation is behind you and that chemo will soon be over. I pray that you will feel better each day and that you and your family will have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Love and prayers from your home town.
